Rapprochement

I don’t know where to spend the night
I only know they will come in the morning
I took a gander to the neighbor’s house and saw them
through the window’s blur of condensation and frost
heard them cut through freezing fog
honking impatience they circled and hovered
–they are waiting for me

my elders have experience in these matters
with a little distance we can build a consensus
snug as a nest of overlapping grasses and moss
when it becomes clear I will join them
a gaggle proceeding with a noisy grace
but I don’t know where to spend the night
I only know they will come in the morning
